Pool Baking Soda Calculator – Total Alkalinity
Calculate how much sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) in pounds, ounces, and kilograms is required to raise pool Total Alkalinity to safe, buffered levels.
Estimated Baking Soda
Raise alkalinity: 60 → 90 ppm (+30 ppm)
•This is an estimate. Add in stages, circulate the water for at least 4–6 hours, and retest rather than correcting a large difference all at once.
•Commercial grocery store baking soda (100% sodium bicarbonate) is chemically identical to pool-store "Alkalinity Up" at a fraction of the cost.
•Scatter the dry powder over the deep end surface with the circulation pump running. It dissolves rapidly without clouding.
Total Alkalinity: The Essential pH Anchor
Why Total Alkalinity Matters
Total Alkalinity (TA) measures your water ability to neutralize acid. It acts as a chemical shock absorber for pH. When Total Alkalinity is within the ideal 80 to 120 ppm window, pH remains stable.
If Total Alkalinity drops below 70 ppm, the water loses its buffering capacity. This causes "pH bounce"—where minor factors like rain, bather sweat, or chlorine addition cause wild, rapid swings in pH that corrode ladders, pump seals, and heat exchangers.
Application Instructions
- Turn on the pump: Ensure main filtration is circulating on high before adding.
- Scatter over deep end: Walk around the deep end perimeter broadcasting the powder gently over the surface.
- Never pre-mix in a bucket: Sodium bicarbonate dissolves readily in pool water; pre-mixing in small volumes creates unnecessary thick slurry.
- Circulate and retest: Wait at least 4 hours with pump running before testing TA again.
