Free Chlorine (FC) is the active, unbonded sanitizer available in the water to kill bacteria and oxidize algae. Combined Chlorine (CC) is chlorine that has bound to nitrogen and ammonia waste (chloramines that cause strong chemical odor and eye burn). Total Chlorine (TC) is the sum of both: TC = FC + CC. When testing, you want FC between 2.0 and 4.0 ppm and CC as close to 0 ppm as possible.
