Recommended Adjustment Sequence

Do not add multiple chemicals simultaneously. Chemical adjustments should be executed in this order:

  1. 1Step 1: Balance Total Alkalinity first. Bicarbonate buffers the water, making subsequent pH control predictable.
  2. 2Step 2: Adjust pH with muriatic acid slowly into the deep end with the pump circulating.
  3. 3Step 3: Add Free Chlorine sanitizer after TA and pH are stabilized.
Pool Chemical Safety Guidelines

Pool chemical calculations are estimates. Verify your pool volume and test results, follow the product label, add chemicals separately, circulate the water as directed, and retest before making further adjustments.

Never mix chlorine products with acids or other pool chemicals. Mixing can release lethal toxic chlorine gas.

The 5 Pillars of Healthy Pool Water

1. Free Chlorine (Sanitization)

Chlorine kills harmful pathogens, viruses, and algae. Keep Free Chlorine within 2.0 to 4.0 ppm. Never let it drop to 0 ppm even for a few hours in warm weather.

2. pH (Bather Comfort & Equipment Longevity)

Human tears have a pH of approximately 7.4. Keeping pool water between 7.4 and 7.6 prevents eye irritation while preventing scale formation and metallic corrosion.

3. Total Alkalinity (The pH Buffer)

Alkalinity buffers against sudden acid or base shocks. Adjust alkalinity first with sodium bicarbonate before making fine adjustments to pH.

4. Calcium Hardness (Plaster Protection)

Water with insufficient calcium is "hungry" and will dissolve calcium directly out of pool plaster, pebble finishes, and tile grout, causing permanent pitting and etching.

5. Cyanuric Acid (Sunscreen for Chlorine)

Without stabilizer, sunlight destroys 90% of free chlorine within two hours. Maintain 30 to 50 ppm CYA to protect chlorine longevity.

Frequently Asked Questions: Pool Chemistry

Always adjust chemicals in this specific sequence: 1) Total Alkalinity first (buffers the water), 2) pH second (alkalinity stabilizes pH adjustments), 3) Calcium Hardness, 4) Cyanuric Acid (Stabilizer), and 5) Free Chlorine sanitizer last. Never add all chemicals at the same time.
