Why Salt Level Matters
Saltwater pools are not chlorine-free. A Saltwater Chlorine Generator (SWG) electrolytic cell passes a low-voltage electrical current through mild saltwater to produce pure chlorine hypochlorous acid (HOCl) on-site.
Most chlorinator cells require salinity between 2,800 and 3,400 ppm (parts per million), with 3,200 ppm being the industry sweet spot. If salt drops below 2,600 ppm, the generator shuts down with a "Low Salt" alert. If salt exceeds 4,000 ppm, the cell will draw excessive electrical current and shut down on "High Salt" overload.
How to Add Salt Correctly
- Turn off the SWG cell: Turn off power to the salt generator cell before dumping salt into the pool.
- Distribute around the perimeter: Cut open bags and pour salt around the shallow perimeter, about 2 feet away from the edge.
- Never pour into the skimmer: Super-concentrated salt brine will damage your pool pump impeller, heat exchanger, and filter seals.
- Brush and circulate: Brush until no salt crystals sit on the bottom. Keep pump running for 24 hours, retest salt level, and only then power on the salt generator.
